Extending battery life. Reviving dead batteries How to revive rechargeable batteries

Today's video is devoted to interesting ways to extend the life of a dead battery. What if they sat down, and you need to restore them so that they can last for some more time. The proposed method is not new, but will differ from what we are used to seeing and hearing. The author of the channel said Homemade and gadget +.

So, our batteries are in a flashlight with a fan. Let's check how they work. It can be seen that the flashlight is on, the fan rotates with difficulty. Naturally, they sat down. We take out the dead batteries of this device and check it with a tester. Now let's leave them in a pre-prepared container, in which there will be a stand so that the batteries are in a vertical position. The stand is made of ordinary plastic sleeves.

We put the container with the nose down, up and fill it with water 3-5 mm below the top level of the battery. This is necessary so that there is no short circuit between plus and minus through the water. Fill with water, ordinary water, literally two minutes after it has been heated to a boil. Leave in this position for 10-15 minutes until the water cools to room temperature.
The water has cooled down. We take it out and check it with a tester. The device shows that the batteries are almost restored to the initial charge.

It can be seen that the flashlight shines brighter than before the extension of service, the fan has also restored its operation.
This method was tested only on alkaline batteries.

Salt battery recovery

In this video, I will share my method of restoring AA batteries. To do this, we need the batteries themselves, electrical tape, a marker, scissors, a tester, a syringe and a working solution. First, let's check the performance. As you can see, they are generally dead. Let's see what the device shows. We take it out and proceed to restore their work.

Important information. Only salt batteries are suitable for this experiment. They should be intact on the outside, there should be no smudges and secretions. Batteries of other types, i.e. alkaline, alkaline or rechargeable batteries, are not suitable for this method. This is dangerous to health.
So, we take a salt battery, find a connecting seam and at an angle of 90 degrees to the seam at a distance of 1 centimeter from the edge, we make 4 marks. In these places we make holes with a drill for 4. We drill very carefully so as not to damage the shell, we drill only the outer shell, no more.

After the holes are made for the batteries, we put them in one container with a plus on top. We fill with a working solution so that the level blocks the upper drilling. We use 6% vinegar as a solution. Fill out carefully. In this state, leave the batteries for 10 15 minutes. The temperature of the solution should be at room temperature. We wait 15 minutes and proceed further. After the batteries have been saturated with the solution, carefully lay them out and lay them seam down to dry so that the excess is absorbed onto a napkin. Leave in this state for 10 minutes. Next, we cover the hole with ordinary electrical tape.

The final stage of our experience of charge recovery has come. We check the device. We insert them into the flashlight and try to turn it on. The light bulb is on. The experience went well. Let me remind you that this method of extending the work is only suitable for salt batteries.

How to temporarily "revive" a dead battery?

Let's raise an interesting topic.

I recently had a fever, and my electronic thermometer ran out of battery.

Inside the usual meager battery:

It was in the evening, and such a battery is not sold in supermarkets - only in specialized stalls.

And what did I do?

I took out the battery and warmed it up well with my hands. Chemical processes "cheered up" and I measured the temperature.

It took me 3 measurements.

The thermometer even made sounds. Then already, the battery finally sat down.

These methods of "revitalization" of batteries are suitable for equipment that consumes a small amount of energy (receiver, clock, LED flashlight, barrier or car alarm key fob, etc.).

I will give some tips that I have used in my life in order to revive the battery for a short time:

  • One day, the battery in my car alarm key fob ran out. And I couldn't open the car. It was at night, there were no kiosks. He opened the trunk with the key, found the pliers and crumpled the battery with them. Then this battery worked for another week! What happens? If the battery is crushed, the electrolyte shifts a little and there are areas in it that can still create the necessary reactions to produce an electric current.
  • As a child, I was engaged in radio electronics. Then there were only salt batteries. The method of revitalization is simple: “soak” in salt water. It took long enough.
  • Finger batteries can be kept in boiling water for about 15 minutes. But do not cook - it's dangerous. Of course, this will not give them a full charge, but for a while the device can work.
  • It also helps to puncture the battery and pour some water (or acetic acid) into it. This will encourage the chemical reaction.
  • Do not try to revive "bloated" and overheated batteries. It can also be dangerous.

In any case, this will not help restore you to a full charge. Maximum 10% battery charge.

What should not be done?

In no case should you try to charge ordinary batteries using any chargers. This can lead to bad consequences.

And in no case should you carry out the above manipulations with batteries that are already out of order.

Batteries are best disposed of, it makes no sense to revive them, since when connected to a power source, there can be the most unpredictable consequences.

Batteries tend to run out at the most inopportune moment. What to do, how to revive the battery? The most correct answer is to avoid such a situation.

Battery selection

The two main types of batteries in popular sizes AA, AAA are saline and alkaline. Alkaline batteries are better known as "alkaline" from the English word Alkaline (alkaline). Alkaline batteries have a higher capacity and life than saline batteries. In commercials up to 10 times, realistically, three to five times. The cost of alkaline is two to three times higher. Mathematically, it turns out that the acquisition of alkaline elements is more profitable.

Sometimes the benefits are not obvious. For example, TV remote controls consume little power. Here the salt battery will do well.

Important! If the battery is alkaline, the inscription Alkaline must be present on the packaging and on the battery. If there is no inscription, it is a salt battery.

Which manufacturer is better

You can find many tests, which battery is better. Most of it is custom-made advertising to promote various brands. Well, one large manufacturer just almost convinced everyone that he had “more bunnies”. Batteries are now produced by any brand known for its electronics. These are quite high-quality, capacious elements.

The lower price segment is "local" brands. They are either owned by local traders or supermarket chains. Usually the price matches the quality. Criterias of choice:

  1. Production date, expiration date. In 90% of cases, only the shelf life is indicated on batteries. It is 2-3 years for saline elements, 4-5 years for alkaline ones. The difference between “fresh” elements and those that have lain for a couple of years is 40-50%. Testing different brands just doesn't make sense. Even for a fair test, the customer will provide the freshest batch and win it. We choose batteries with a maximum shelf life.
  2. Battery series. Manufacturers practice the release of “just Alkaline” and Super (Turbo, Premium, Maximum) alkaline batteries. In the second case, the capacity is higher. The difference is 20-30%. Economic feasibility depends on price and shelf life. Stale Super is weaker than “ordinary” alkaline.
  3. Packing condition. Packaging that has sun-bleached (exposure to high temperatures in summer) or soaked in rain and snow (at open marketplaces) says that these items are not recommended for purchase.
  4. External discharge, oiliness. This is an external manifestation of electrolyte leakage. Purchase must be cancelled. There is a legend that the batteries of the most famous brand “do not leak”. It's just a legend.

Battery life

How to extend battery life? We extend the work in a simple way - periodic use. If an alkaline battery is used for an hour or two, and then given time to “rest”, the amount of energy released will be 30-50% more. By having a spare set and swapping them around, two sets can last as long as three such sets would normally give.

For this property, Alkaline batteries are sometimes called self-healing. The chemical reaction in batteries is irreversible, self-healing is impossible. It will not be possible to restore such an element to the initial level of charge, but it is possible to extend the life of the batteries significantly.

Battery resuscitation

How to reanimate the battery if there are no spare ones, all the elements are dead, and the situation is critical.

  • Physical impact in the form of tapping. Suitable hammer, stone, any other heavy object.
  • Physical impact in the form of compression. It is necessary to crush the element (pliers work well) closer to its middle part.
  • Heating the element (for example, with a lighter).

There is a simple explanation for these actions. The chemical reaction inside the element is accelerated. Unreacted electrolyte residues are used. Such resuscitation helps for a short time. Repeated attempts will not give anything. Batteries are dead now.

Such methods help elements AA, AAA, C, D. Battery assemblies 6F22 (krone) 23A (12 volt cell) and the like, only heating is suitable. Physical impact will simply destroy such an assembly.

Important addition! Similar methods of exposure are suitable for rechargeable elements - batteries. But after applying the impact, the battery will fail, it will be unsuitable for further operation.

Security measures

  • Physical and thermal influences should not be applied to lithium disk cells (tablets). The element may explode.
  • Do not charge disposable cells with chargers designed to charge reusable batteries. The result will be comparable to physical impact, but there is a high risk of electrolyte leakage, charger failure.
  • Do not give used batteries to children as toys.
  • If the electrolyte gets on an open area of the skin, rinse it with running water.
  • Used dead batteries must be handed over to special collection points for further processing.

If the batteries are not used for a long time, they should be removed from the working compartment and stored at room temperature. Avoid contact with moisture, contact with metal objects. Replace as a set.

All batteries are labeled: Do not recharge. This means that the battery cannot be recharged, it is for single use only.

In order not to expose yourself to the risk of electrolyte leakage or cell destruction, it is enough to take care of the availability of a spare kit in advance. This is the most hassle-free way to keep your electronics running continuously.

It happened that your favorite digital phone, smartphone quickly lose charge, spontaneously turn off. Diagnostics shows that the battery has lost capacity by 50%. Is there a way to restore the device to working capacity without replacing the battery? How to restore the battery capacity of a mobile phone?

To perform a restore, you first need to determine the type of battery installed in your phone. In inexpensive and old models, you can find Ni-Cd nickel cadmium and Ni-Mh nickel-metal hydride energy sources. Modern gadgets are equipped with Li-Ion lithium-ion and LiPo lithium-polymer batteries.

The problem of acid galvanic cells is a large self-discharge and "memory effect", which lead to a rapid loss of capacity. They are designed for only 200-300 charge cycles. Restoring the performance of a clogged phone battery is possible by training. In addition, batteries that have been working for a long time lose water, adding distilled water is one of the methods to restore the activity of the cell.

For lithium batteries, there is no way to recover memory. Any overcharging, deep discharge, low or high temperature lead to capacity loss. Despite the long life, the ability to charge 500-1000 times, a lithium battery can quickly lose capacity in adverse conditions. Cell phone batteries can be restored for a limited period as a way to extract information. Isn't it dangerous?

Mobile phone battery recovery

Inexpensive cell phones with nickel-cadmium batteries can last a long time. But the battery after hundreds of recharging does not stand up, it discharges quickly, leaving the owner without communication. Is it always advisable, and how can I restore battery life? Upon consultation at the service center, it turns out that the cost of the battery is slightly less than the cost of the phone model. there are few people who want to reanimate cadmium batteries.

How to restore the work of lithium batteries in modern phone models? It must be remembered that the capacity of the lithium-ion and lithium-polymer batteries of the phone is not restored. You can revive the gadget temporarily, but at any moment the energy source can create a fire, explosion, or simply fail. Therefore, it is important to follow the instructions clearly from the first days of operation. Capacity is lost at an average of 20% per year, even under operating conditions.

Your best bet is to buy a new battery. If you are not fond of practical radio engineering and electronics, entrust the service center to restore the old battery of your phone.

How to restore the battery at home

Before you start restoring battery capacity in a cell phone, you need to know the type and charge of the battery. The event is more interesting than productive. In most cases, the capacity is not restored and the battery will have to be bought. The desire to restore working capacity is justified if the battery is old and discontinued, and the mobile phone completely suits you.

Consider ways to restore a cell phone battery at home:

  • We use a special Imax B6 charger. You need to check the voltage with a multimeter. If the voltage does not allow you to measure the battery controller, you need to connect to the controller and with a current of 1 A at a voltage of 3.7, recharge the battery to 3.2 V. After that, you need to insert the battery into place and charge it with your own charger.
  • You can use a battery from another device with a voltage of 9 V. To do this, connect the positive and negative contacts of the sources, the energy will begin to flow, warming up the “dead” battery. At this point, the circuit must be broken, continuing to charge in the standard way.
  • Nickel-cadmium batteries can be restored to working condition by breaking the internal dendrites with a strong short-term current pulse from a powerful source.
  • After drilling a hole in the cover of the nickel-cadmium element, add a cube of water inside. After a while, cheer up with a pulsed current. If within a few days the voltage remains zero, add another cube of water. Did not help - throw it away. It helped - to close the hole with glue.
  • You can restore the battery by replacing the unusable elements. Fine and careful soldering will be required without heating the cell body.

A person who has the skills to repair electronic circuits can be engaged in the restoration of a battery for a phone with a positive result. Special care is required when working with lithium batteries.

Watch how to restore a cell phone battery with your own hands in the video.

How to restore Li-ion phone battery

Modern mobile devices use lithium cells. A feature of Li-ion and LiPo batteries is that the return of capacity is associated with the restoration of the amount of lithium ions in the system. But as a result of a chemical reaction, some of them become insoluble, there are not enough charge carriers, and it is impossible to return them. Is it possible to restore partial performance of the phone battery for a short time? How to restore capacity?

There are ways to revive a mobile phone. The difficulty is that the controller built into the system protects the battery from both excess charge and deep discharge. But it happened, in the summer they charged the battery in the room completely, and forgot the phone under the sun on the bench.

Overcharging the phone's lithium-ion battery caused the case to boil and swell. If there is no crack, the shape can be corrected. How to repair a swollen battery? To do this, you need to pierce a microscopic hole in the cap under the control electronic unit. Lay the tile on a hard horizontal surface and press on top. After straightening the case, seal the hole with epoxy glue and repair by soldering the sensor in place. Remember, extra effort will lead to a short circuit. Gas formation indicates changes in the structure of the electrolyte. After you managed to restore, a long swollen phone battery will not work. Battery deformation is not always determined by eye. To restore, you need to find the problem. Therefore, you need to put the tile on a flat, smooth surface and twist. If there is no deformation, the plate will remain lying - since friction forces hold the plane.

A poorly charged battery loses its capacity in the cold. Therefore, it may go into a deep discharge, recovery will be required. The mass frozen in the cold finally loses its activity. However, there are recommendations on the forums on how to restore a dead battery with a shock freeze. It is advised to put the battery in the freezer for 20-30 minutes. Then insert into the phone and charge for a minute. Then you need to remove it, and let it warm up to room temperature. They say that after that the battery will take a charge. Check on the battery, intending to part with it forever.

How to restore cell phone battery capacity using buildup? All you need is a smartphone and a charger. Discharge the battery completely by playing a resource-intensive game, then fully charge it to 100%. Repeat the operation several times.

How to restore a phone battery after a deep discharge

It happened that the phone's battery went into deep protection and did not want to take a charge. How to restore the battery capacity of a mobile phone if it loses power? The reason is not the battery, but the protective board, which operates in the range of 3.1 - 3.7 V. The controller does not pass current if the voltage in the element is below the baseboard. This can happen to the device if it is left discharged for long periods of storage.

You can charge the battery, bypassing protection, to the contacts. Using the iMAX B6 charger or its Chinese clone and a multimeter, this is easy to do.

It is necessary to measure the voltage with a multimeter, take readings in millivolts. Ground the negative pole, connect the red to the charger and apply a current of 1 A. In this case, the voltage should be 3.7 V. The voltage on the battery rises, which means that the charge is on. When the voltage reaches 3.2 V, the battery is placed in the gadget and connected to normal charging.

With all methods of battery recovery, safety precautions must be observed. Do not leave devices unattended - control the temperature of the battery. When assembling the circuit, do not reverse the polarity. After a short circuit, the battery can no longer be restored.

Video

How to restore the phone battery and other useful tips on the video.

The life of a modern person is very closely connected with a variety of electrical things: be it a portable radio, telephone, flashlight, navigator, camera, and much more! The main thing that unites all of them is that their operation requires power sources: various batteries and accumulators.

Video version of the article:

Let's talk about some ways to revive dead batteries!

They naturally often sit down, which in turn can deprive us of the chance to use them. And not just in ordinary and calm situations, when we can solve the problem by recharging from the network or buying a new battery, but also when you are, for example, on a hike or are in a situation where your life is in danger!

Revival of "finger" batteries.

1 wayprobably many people know it consists in impacting the battery with blows (leave it against the wall, gently tap it with a hammer!) This can return some charge, because in this way the oxides that have arisen in the battery are destroyed and it will last for some time. From the experience of childhood, one can also note a more radical impact, the crushing of the battery (with a multi-tool, if any) in its different parts (someone even uses their teeth and simply bites the battery, which of course we do not recommend).

2 . Piercing the battery in various ways in different places, so that the puncture points do not touch the inner rod. You can pierce randomly, you can make a couple of punctures along the rod at a certain distance from it, or pierce across the plus and minus, this will already have an effect on itself, to internal processes air will be connected to the battery and form an additional electrode.

3. You can also boil our batteries in boiling water (several minutes).

4. There is also another option to make holes and fill them with water, from a syringe or something else, so that the water does not flow out, close the holes with electrical tape or whatever is at hand.

Revitalizing coin cell batteries

1. Recharging from a finger battery, we need two wires and a working finger battery, we will connect (with wires) plus to plus, and minus to minus our batteries, and hold them like that for a while.

Greetings friends. Today I will tell you about the most effective way to restore capacity in lead-acid batteries.
During the period of even the most correct operation, the battery loses its capacity every day. And at one fine moment, its charge is not enough to start the car engine. This example is aggravated with the advent of cold weather.

Naturally, the motorist puts the battery on charge and after a while sees that the battery is not charging, and the voltage during charging is normal - 14.4-14.7 V or higher (12.6 without a charger).

Then, if there is a load plug, the check is performed by it and it turns out that under load, the voltage drops a lot. Everything points to a loss of battery capacity. The reason for this is the sulfation of the plates.

Usually, with proper operation, this happens after about 5 years. This is a very good indicator. And there is a way out - buy a new battery. But, if you want to save money (since batteries aren't cheap these days), and extend battery life by a couple more years, then maintenance is a must. And not simple, but special, which can reanimate the battery.

What kind of batteries can be recovered?

This method is suitable for batteries that have not been subject to serious current or mechanical damage during their operation. And they became unusable as a result of temporary, natural sulfation.
This method is not suitable for batteries that have internal shedding of plates, internal shorting of cans, swelling or other mechanical damage.
The method is excellent for desulfation of the plates and is popularly called the "polarity reversal" method of the battery.
I will divide battery recovery into three steps.

Battery recovery process

Stage one: preparation

The first thing that is not necessary, but you need to do is to clean the surface of the battery from any contaminants. Wash the entire surface with detergent.
Next, visually make sure that there are no damages on the case, that there are no swellings and bulges on the sides.
Second, open all the corks of the jars and make sure that there is electrolyte. If it is not in one of the cans, then you need to make sure that there are no cracks on the body.
Then, using a flashlight, inspect the plates inside - there should be no shedding. Here, just for one thing, you can clearly see sulfation - a white coating on the plates.

If everything is in order, add distilled water to each jar to the level. It will not be superfluous to measure the density of the electrolyte in each compartment.

Stage two: the classic recovery method

Before moving on to reversing the battery, it is necessary to test the usual recovery method, which has already become a classic.
Step one: We charge the battery to a full charge of 14.4 V.

Step two: with a halogen bulb or other load, we discharge the battery to 10.6 V (voltage is measured under the same load).

We repeat the cycle of these two steps 3 times and charge the battery to full. We check the capacity with a load fork or a starter in the operation of the machine. If the battery has recovered - good - we continue to operate. If not, or not enough, then go to the third stage.

Stage three: battery polarity reversal

This battery recovery method is the most effective of all. And reanimates the battery in almost 90% of cases.
Step one: we hang a load on the battery in the form of a halogen lamp, and discharge the battery to zero. The lamp will go out in about a day (it all depends on the initial battery capacity). We leave the battery with the lamp connected for another 2-3 days in order to finally discharge the remnants.
Step two: reverse charging the battery. We connect the charger in reverse: plus to minus, and minus to plus. In order not to spoil your charger (or so that the short circuit protection does not work), we connect the same halogen lamp in series with the batteries. And charge the battery in reverse polarity. After the voltage has risen to 5-6 volts, the lamp can be excluded from the circuit. It is desirable to set the charge current to 5 percent of the battery capacity. That is, if the capacity is 60 ampere-hours, then the charge current in the opposite direction is set to 3 amperes. At this time, all electrolyte jars begin to actively boil and hiss - this is normal, since the reverse process is underway.

We charge for about a day, until a voltage of 12-14 V appears. As a result, you have a fully charged battery, in which the plus output is minus, and the minus is plus.

Step three: again completely discharge the battery with a halogen lamp for a couple of days. Then we make the correct charging plus to plus, minus to minus. We charge to the full up to 14.4 V.
This completes all steps.

Battery recovery result

Usually the result helps to increase the battery capacity to 70-100% of the factory capacity, of course there are exceptions.
Specifically, in my case, it was possible to increase the capacity by 95% - which is an excellent result. The white sulphate coating disappeared from the plates, and they turned black like a new battery. The electrolyte became more transparent and pure.

Battery Recovery Video

I recommend that you watch a video where a completely "dead" battery is restored, which is about 10 years old.
At first, there is a “buildup” with a change in the polarity of the power supply, and almost at the very end, a full polarity reversal cycle has already been given.
