Travel book: collecting travel impressions. TOP ideas for designing a travel book What size to make a travel book

Hello! MMy name is Katya, I live in the small Belarusian city of Mozyr. By training she is a speech therapist, by nature she is a wife, mother and simply a person in love with scrapbooking. I have been familiar with this type of creativity since 2011, but my blogging life and more or less conscious scrapping began in 2013.The most favorite scrap objects are all kinds of albums and minis. My favorite style is mixed media, but I would like to try myself in all directions - from steampunk to CAS. I get the greatest boost of energy from communicating with like-minded people.My scrap motto: "Don't stand still!"

In full swingora holidays, so today I will show you how to make a blank for a travel book (t ravel book) , which is very convenient when traveling. The size of the future beech is 16.5 cm x 13 cm, very compact.

For the travel I needed the following materials:

1 sheet of double-sided paper from Teresa Collins "Far Away"
(you can take any topic - for example, “Travel” from FleurDesign);

2 sheets of thick kraft cardboard, size 30x30;

In the second photo the cardboard has already been cut into 11x15 cm pieces

For the cover:

1) So, our sheets of scrap paper have a size of 15x15 cm. We measure 11 cm and crease. Why do we need this? These folds can be used in different ways: to make a karma, a folding bed, or an additional folding page. It should look like this:

2) We cut our kraft cardboard into 11x15 cm pieces.

3) Let's start putting together our workpiece. Scrap paper will alternate with kraft cardboard. It is very convenient to take notes on craft leaves. I crease some sheets of scrap paper to the right, some to the left, and some to face each other. The photo shows how I do it.

4) So, we have a beautiful stack in our hands. We will assemble our travel on a spring. Therefore, we select scrap paper, which is folded to the left (where the spring will be). We stitch the punched part on three sides using a machine to create a pocket.

We fold the workpiece again and punch holes with a binder.

5) Let's start decorating. I tried to use only flat decorations so that our travel would not be bloated. I stamp sheets, add tape and die cutting, here and there PL cards and cards cut from a sheet of scrap paper from our collection. I get it like this:

On photo 1 I used the card for PL, on photos 2 and 4 - stitched pockets,photo 3 - two blanks folded face down + cards for PL. The cards are sewn to the fold and I have a pocket on the back side.Photo 4.5 -along with sheets of scrap paper and kraft cardboard I added large PL cards and envelopes(photo 6) . The cards will be used for notes, and in the envelopes we will store decorations, stamps and stamps, which will be useful to us for filling out the travel book on the trip. Later you can put the memorabilia there. Travel is almost ready!

6) Cover . A lazy reader can simply make a regular cover, like for a block on a spring/rings, but we are not looking for easy ways, so we makefabric cover with hidden spring. For this we will need three blanks of binding cardboard. Like these ones.

My average blank (for the spine) is 3 cm. Yours, dear readers, may differ. To do this, measure the thickness of the spine, taking into account the size of your spring. This is easy to do by placing the workpiece on the table and placing a ruler vertically against it. The size of my two outer blanks is 16.5 x 13 cm. The width of the blank is a block (11 cm) + spring + 0.5 cm allowance.

7) Next, we do everything as for a regular cover for a bound notebook. I didn’t take pictures of each stage, I’ll just say what I did. We glue our blanks for the cover onto the padding polyester and cut off the edges of the padding polyester. We cover it with fabric and machine stitch it around the perimeter. We select the decor. Practice shows that travel beeches exist for the purpose of carrying them everywhere in a bag. Therefore, the decor should be minimalistic and tightly sewn. Your travel bag should be made in such a way that it is not afraid of rain, dirt, or being carried in a lady's bag, where lying around There are many necessary and useful things piled up in creative chaos. Therefore, I settled on a laconic inscription, and for reliability I placed it under a transparent film. I got it like this:

8) Clasp . While making notebooks and albums, I tried many different types of fasteners. The Velcro fastener seems to me to be the best option because it is reliable and quite simple to implement.

I cut out two rectangles from fabric. Their width depends on your desire, but do not forget to leave 0.5 cm allowances for the seams. Because My fabric is a little thin, so I line it with duplerin. If your fabric is not very thin, you can skip this step.

We fold the blanks with their front sides facing each other and stitch them on three sides. We do not sew up the narrow side opposite the end with Velcro, because you need to turn the workpiece inside out. Turn it inside out. In order for my corners to turn out better, I put the workpiece on an iron ruler. After this, the unsewn end can be tucked inside the workpiece, and the workpiece itself can be stitched around the perimeter.

Now we measure and sew the second part of the Velcro tape to the cover.

In order to attach the tail of our fastener to the back, we need to connect the Velcro, insert the block into the cover, wrap the cover with the fastener and mark the stitching location. When I wrapped the clasp around the cover, I did not make it very tight, because... As the travel beech fills, it may become a little thicker. Sew the fastener strap to the cover. The cover is ready.

9 ) Ta-dam! We're reaching the finish line!Insert the block with the spring into the binding. To do this, cut out a rectangle measuring 16.2 x 14 cm from thick paper (photo 1 ). We cut a rectangle in the middle(photo 2) . Fold the workpiece in half and punch holes with a binder(photo 3) . Don't forget to attach this spine to the travel beech block itself. The spine and endpapers should be 0.5 cm larger than the block. Now we crease our spine in the middle of our holes and again after 0.5 cm(photo 4) .

Only lazy people haven’t written about the design of travel books. But I would like to show you the ideas that I personally liked. I used many of them in my works. And in general, I like to systematize everything for ease of use. So check out my TOP travel magazine design ideas.

  • Make a travel checklist

Things you took with you, places you want to visit, emotions you got during your trip, cocktails you drank on the beach, food you destroyed in a cafe, and so on.

  • Don't throw anything away and collect everything that is in bad shape :-) .

I am very careful with everything that accumulates during a trip. Namely: boarding passes, museum tickets, transport tickets, business cards and hotel brochures, city maps, cafe advertising, candy and sweet wrappers, labels, postcards, etc. . All this goes on during the design of travel book pages. Even if you can’t use everything in the design, make pockets for these little things.

  • Spread with local stamps

While in Naples, we went to the local post office. The goal was simple: buy stamps to Russia. This trip gave me a simple idea: why not make a page dedicated exclusively to stamps. Then I saw that my idea was not new, but that didn’t stop it from being an idea.

Another great cover design idea is to use a map of the area. And mark your route on it, for example.

I would love to share my works, but so far I haven’t gotten around to photographing them in good quality. As soon as the camera is repaired, I will share what I did with my own hands.

And here is a selection of interesting posts about travel books. Thanks to the authors for great ideas and inspiration.

  • These are tips from Varya. A lot of photos and ideas.

The master class was conducted by Anna Semenova.

Summer is a wonderful time to travel. A necessary attribute of exciting travels is a travel book. In it you can save all the pleasant little things that will later remind you of a good time.

Materials:
thick cardboard;
textile;
padding polyester;
x/6 fabric for spine;
decorations - to taste.

Tools:
glue “Moment Crystal”;
stamps.

Book size - 15 x 21 cm (7 spreads).

How to make a travel book.

We cut 8 pages and 2 covers from beer cardboard - 10 rectangles 15x21 cm. For binding from x/6 fabric, cut 7 strips 21 cm long and about 3 cm wide.

1

Assembling the binding. Glue the two pages together using a strip of fabric.

2

Glue the pages and strips of fabric together one by one. We bend the glued pages into a “ladder” so that nothing moves anywhere. In total, we glue together 8 pages of beer cardboard (there are two more left - this is for the cover).

3

We secure the binding with braid, which also adds aesthetics to the spine.

4

We cut out a spine measuring 21 cm from thick paper. We measure the thickness according to the width of the binding plus 3 cm for gluing. It turned out to be 9 cm.

5

We glue the spine to the covers.

6

Cover with padding polyester. It is enough just to “grab” it a little with glue so that it does not move out. You don't need a lot of glue, because it can then be felt through the cover in unpleasant lumps.

7

We cover the cover with fabric and form the corners.

8

Install the magnetic button.

9

We sew a strap for the fastener and attach it to the back cover.

10

We design the front cover. We apply a design to wooden mugs using embossing powder. The most important thing is to decorate the cover with wear-resistant parts: brade, wooden chipboard, cord, metal decorations.

11

For the inside of the album we decorate paper envelopes. Glue it into a travel book.

12

We sew pockets from tracing paper onto some pages. You can put small guidebooks, metro maps, beautiful theater tickets in them.

13

We decorate all the pages of the album to our liking. Don't forget to make several photo backgrounds.

14

Glue the inside of the album into the cover. We do not glue the spine to the binding!

By the way.
The travel book should have a lot of pockets and envelopes so that everything fits. It’s also a good idea to provide places for photographs.

It is better to take the fabric for the top with a small, dim pattern, then you can design the cover in any style. And it’s better that the fabric is dense and non-staining, you remember: the travel book is about to travel.

Adviсe.
You can use paper strips instead of fabric, but fabric is more durable in this case. It should be remembered that the book must survive the flight and numerous trips to various places of interest.

You can make the background for the pages yourself or use ready-made scrap paper.

Decor.
- The pages of a travel book can be white, multi-colored, and they can also be aged. To do this, place the watercolor paper in the oven and watch the process of browning.

Leave room for travel notes - a sort of “living” story during the trip, in which you will share your impressions. Also mark interesting information about the place where you are: historical information, urban structure, etc. d.

Make the pages themed. For example, dedicated to food (write down a recipe for a local dish, post a photo of your favorite dessert), active recreation (post photographs that capture shots of excursions, trips to interesting places, your triumphal ascents, etc.), the beach (sunsets, sea, sand may the bliss remain with you for a long time). Think about what else you remember? Maybe the color of the local people or nature - all this will make your travel book truly fascinating.

Creating a travel journal is a new trend among avid tourists. So what is it and how to make a travel book with your own hands?

Previously, it was fashionable to store memories in beautiful albums. The footage taken on vacation was carefully sorted out, the best of them were printed out, inserted into plastic envelopes and... thrown onto the far shelf of the bookcase. As practice has shown, impressive volumes with photographs were taken out only on rare occasions, in order to show them to friends who did not have time to escape.

With the advent of digital technology, transferring important images to paper began to be abandoned. Nowadays, most people store their files on their computer's hard drive. However, this approach deprived the memories of the soul and turned them into standard jpeg pictures.

Gradually, the tradition of travel documentation is being revived. After their arrival, millions of happy vacationers begin creating travel books or travel journals. They are a uniquely designed hodgepodge of photographs, candy wrappers and cute little things brought from the tour.

What does a travel journal include?

1. Postcards

In almost every city you can find sets of postcards for tourists. They depict local landmarks or natural beauty. You can also include postcards received abroad from relatives.

2. Tickets

The main advantage of tickets is that they fix a specific date and time. Inevitably, our memory begins to fail us; in a few years it will be difficult to remember when this or that photograph was taken. Looking at the ticket, you will know for sure that on September 18, 2016 you flew to the Netherlands, and on the 20th you visited the Vincent Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam.

3. Business cards

The printing industry is currently booming. Some business cards can easily be compared to works of art. I love collecting cards of boutiques, cafes, taxis and other useful organizations. Who knows, maybe I’ll decide to permanently move to city N, and the number of the Pizza Home Delivery company will come in handy.

4. Diary entries

Impressions are only good when they are fresh. I spoke in rhyme. It is difficult to describe the delight 10 days after the amazing event. Be sure to fill out several pages in your personal diary in the evenings. Re-reading the entries, you will again plunge into a whirlpool of positive emotions.

5. Photos

Probably, for this point, comments will be unnecessary. You can endlessly look at a professional photograph of the Egyptian pyramids, but not a single picture can replace a cloudy photo in which you stand in front of the tombs of the pharaohs.

6. Maps

Maps add an element of concreteness to your memories. You have the right to use topography as an auxiliary design element of the travel book, or to focus attention on the route. Often a map with key points of the trip is pasted onto the first page of a travel journal and acts as a table of contents. The remaining pages of the notebook are devoted to a description of each location.

7. Autographs and wishes

Often on trips we meet interesting people and make new friends. Sometimes, completely unexpectedly, you can meet a celebrity and get an autograph. Sincere wishes from your new friends will take pride of place in your travel book.

8. Labels and wrappers

Every country has unusual foods. After every trip, handfuls of candy wrappers are found in my pockets. If the label is clean and has an original design, then why not paste it into the magazine. It will be another reminder of the food adventures experienced abroad.

9. Paper for scrapbooking

I love decorating my creations with patterns and textures. Office supply stores and art stores sell scrapbooking paper. It will give your magazine an individual atmosphere and emphasize the significance of its content. For each specific place, you can select the appropriate sheet of colored paper.

10. Brochures

Looking at travel brochures inspires us to travel. Sometimes one “handout” is enough to tear a person away from his home. If your journey began with an advertisement, then under no circumstances throw away such an important document.

During the trip itself, you will come across brochures more than once. In museums and on excursions, you can collect handouts for free to later include them in your notebook of memories.

11. Stickers and stickers

Use funny self-adhesive faces and arrows to add accents. Without their participation, the magazine risks turning into a boring official report. I like the comic style of displaying information, when photographs of people are mixed with frames of thoughts, statements, or combined with cartoon characters.

Let's start making a travel book

For creativity you will need

  • hardcover spiral notebook;
  • glue stick;
  • regular pencil for drawing;
  • scissors;
  • satin ribbons;
  • scraps of beautiful fabric;
  • colored pens or markers.

(even more, however, unfinished albums), but my sister says that only the one you kept during the trip is considered a travel book. Once I tried to keep an album with notes and photographs while on vacation. The idea failed miserably! The notebook never turned from beautiful paper into travel book. I wondered what helped me get it done this time. These are the tips I would have given to someone or myself three years ago to make a travel book work.

1. BUY THE PREPARATION IN ADVANCE

It seems to me that last time all my energy ended in creating the blank. Before leaving for Italy in 2011, I made an excellent album - I chose beautiful sheets, envelopes, and specially went to a scrap club to fasten it all with a spiral. Yes, of course, I am interested in scrapbooking, but still within reasonable limits, so it seems that my passion ended that time when I just needed to start. This time I bought a blank - SmashBook mini format (13 by 19 cm). And although there are no envelopes and single-format pages, I didn’t have to waste time preparing the album. The inspiration started from the moment I boarded the plane.

2. ALWAYS HAVE A TRAVEL BOOK AT YOUR HAND

On the very first day of walking around London, I realized that with a small handbag that only fits a passport and a wallet, I I won't cook oatmeal I won’t make a travel book. So one of the main purchases on Oxford Street was a crossbody bag (oh, they're the best for travel!) that could fit my camera and my mini SmashBook. From that moment on, I carried with me the notebook itself (with a multifunctional glue pen), a camera, scissors, tape, and throughout the day I stuffed leaflets, postcards and tickets into my bag.

3. KEEP A BOOK DURING YOUR TRIP

Last time, this was my biggest mistake - I was afraid to write on such beautiful sheets of paper (in case I made a mistake), so I kept a diary in a separate notebook, supposedly later I would rewrite everything on a clean copy. I also didn’t paste the collected tickets and postcards - then I’ll put everything together and make a beautiful composition. So everything has been lying in the box for three years now: a separate notebook, a separate bag with paper memories. Therefore, listen to my wise sister, as I did, finally give up on perfectionism and do everything as much as possible while traveling. I made recordings and designed them in London pubs and restaurants while traveling on the train (the most difficult thing was not to paste the train ticket into the album - they had to be presented at the arrival station).

4. TAKE INSTANT PHOTOS

Oh, my beloved Instax! I printed out some of the photos and pasted them in when I returned home, but instant photos that can be immediately placed on the pages immediately add inspiration. It seems to me that without them it is more difficult to imagine the final look of the album and this is demotivating. Well, besides, Instax is always fun! Even when, instead of a swan in Hyde Park, you get only a black dot on a white background.

5. USE WASHI TAPE

At the time of my first attempt, I didn’t have washi tape yet; I dug out two pieces of some kind of adhesive tape with patterns, but it didn’t help me. Now I have a whole jar of multi-colored paper tapes, so I again listened to my sister and took with me those that matched the design of my album. I tried my best to place everything and glue it onto the pages while traveling. All that remains for homework is to print and paste some photos, add inscriptions to them and make a cover. And now, my travel book is ready!!
